First shown as a concept vehicle at the 2008 Bologna Motor Show, the Thar traces its heritage back to the Willy's Jeep assembled in India in 1945.
The Thar is powered by a 2.5l, direct injection turbo-diesel CRDe engine which is the result of a joint venture between Austrian company AVL and Bosch in Germany.
The 2.5l engine develops 78kW at 3 800 r/min and 247Nm of torque at 1800 r/min. It drives the rear wheels – or four wheels when required – through a five-speed gearbox, with a two-speed transfer box with low speed selection.
Suspension is independent by means of torsion bars in the front and the live rear axle is suspended on two leaf springs.
Off-road capability is aided by a 200 mm ground clearance, an approach angle of 46 degrees, departure angle of 30degrees and ramp over angle of 15 degrees.
The Mahindra Thar is available at a very competitive price of R169 900 offered with a 50 000km or 24 month warranty.
